How’s 2018 looking for you? It’s important to plan for the year ahead so you understand where you want to go with your business and how you will find and retain clients.
Perhaps you’re wondering why everyone has gone planning-mad at the end of the year when you’re just going from week to week, rebooking clients and hoping new clients will come along.
The thing is, planning is so important if you want to take your business seriously, whether it’s full time or part time. If you were taking a journey somewhere new, you wouldn’t just get in the car and drive. You would plan the route ahead, look at a map either offline or online, plan whether you would go on the motorways or stick to A-roads, plan what time you are leaving and have a good idea on the time you will arrive. If it’s a long journey, no doubt you would also plan in some stops along the way.
It’s the same with your business. Decide what the destination is for your business by the end of the 2018, plus the main points on the route – these are the goals you’ll make for your business. Whatever these goals are, you then need to do some work to achieve these goals.
Take for example a goal of going full time by the end of 2018. What do you need to do to achieve this goal? Break it down into year quarters and then months. Work out where you need to be by the end of the first quarter, then half way and so on then start to fill in the work you need to do. Say you need 10 client slots filled a week by June 2018; you’ll want to increase your marketing efforts so you’ll need to start planning more marketing activity week. Maybe you need a new or updated website, so put that into your plan. Or perhaps you want to start blogging so you might, say, plan to start your blog by February having researched how to by end of January.
Planning ahead will keep you motivated. You’ll know you have certain tasks to do to reach your goals and during times when you have no clients, you can look at your plan and see what you need to be doing to keep moving forward.
You’ll stay accountable, at the very least to yourself but it’s always good to share your plan, perhaps with an accountability partners. Keeping yourself on track will ensure you are taking the steps to grow yourself and your business.
Key Marketing Opportunities
As far as marketing is concerned, planning ahead will help you identify key marketing opportunities during 2018 that you can put in your calendar, such as the London Marathon if you’re a sports massage therapist, or National Stress Awareness Week (and so many holistic modalities can help reduce stress). To help you, I’ve put together a calendar of Awareness Days and Months – go to the Freebies page and download your free calendar to help you plan ahead.
